Helping Veterans work with their health care team

MyHealtheVet - Helping Veterans work with their health care team.

Bob "Doc" Spencer first signed up for My HealtheVet in June 2009. When he first registered on www.myhealth.va.gov, many of the current features didn’t exist. Over the past 10 years the Web site has evolved into a “one-stop shop” for VA patients to access their medical information.

For one Veteran, the ability to stay in touch with your VA care team is an important aspect of your health care. My HealtheVet helps make this happen for Veterans.

The program is designed to empower Veterans to make informed decisions and become active partners in their health care. My HealtheVet features web-based resources and tools for Veterans, service members, their families and their caregivers.

Veterans who use MyHealtheVet can access portions of their VA health record online, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week using the VA Blue Button. Veterans have the ability to print, save and download personal health information. My HealtheVet also allows patients to refill prescriptions, view VA appointments and VA lab results at their convenience, and use Secure Messaging to communicate non-urgent matters with VA health care teams.

For Mr. Spencer, the ability to communicate via Secure Messaging is one of the most valuable features he uses on the VA’s My HealtheVet site.

“I really wanted a reliable way to communicate directly with my Primary Care team,” Mr. Spencer said. “I’ve sent messages about medication renewals, requested appointments and discussed medical conditions.”

Mr. Spencer says the “user friendly” Secure Messaging capability is a benefit to his fellow Veterans.

“I would highly recommend Secure Messaging for Veterans who want to stay in contact with their health care providers,” he said. “I noticed that once I was seen by a VA provider, it was possible to send a Secure Message to them.”
