Northern Arizona VA Health Care System
The Northern Arizona VA Health Care System (NAVAHCS) now offers women Veterans another service, specifically dedicated to serving her! The Pharmacy department now has a pharmacist dedicated to women’s health. The goal of this service is to enhance both quality and access to health care for women Veterans. In 2012, NAVAHCS wrote and received a grant to fund this service and in August 2013, she was hired!
The women’s health pharmacist will not only be providing pharmacological consultative service to women Veterans, she will also serve as a valuable resource for providers and nurses caring for women Veterans. Some of the pharmacological services she will be providing are counseling, prescribing, and or management of gender specific and chronic disease conditions such as:
• Hormone therapy
• Contraception therapy
• Diabetic females with A1C >9 and LDL>100
• Medication review with pregnant female Veterans
• Consultative services to providers and nurses caring for women Veterans
• And more!
Another great benefit of this service is how it will be offered. Women Veterans will have access to their women health pharmacist by either a face-to-face consultation, telephone consultation, or clinical video telehealth consultation. In addition, her primary care provider can rely on the pharmacist’s expertise when needed through e-consults. So this means, no matter where the woman receives her care, the woman Veteran and her provider will have access to the women health pharmacist. As the women Veteran population continues to grow, and more and more women seek to receive their care through the VA, Northern Arizona VA Medical Center will continue its pursuit to meet the unique needs of women Veterans, and provide them with equitable, high quality health care in a safe and sensitive environment.
